Why Consider Sedation Dentistry?

Our Customizable Office-Based Anesthesia Options

Local Anesthesia

We use a local anesthesia called lidocaine in all our oral surgeries, even when other forms of anesthesia are used. Lidocaine is applied directly to the surgical site to calm any sensations of pain in the area.

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is an inhaled gas with calming and mild pain-relieving effects. It has been used in dentistry for decades, often in conjunction with local anesthetics.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation, also called “twilight sedation,” makes it possible for a patient to not feel any pain relating to their procedure. In fact, it is so effective that they may not even remember their treatment! Patients who are to receive this type of anesthesia should not eat or drink anything (except prescription medications with a sip of water) for at least six hours before their scheduled procedure. Patients will also need a responsible adult to drive them home afterward.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia puts you in an unconscious state. You’ll be completely unaware of the procedure being performed, and you’ll wake up after it’s completed. Even though this is usually reserved for more complex surgeries, you may request it for your more routine procedure if you have severe dental anxiety. Your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure, and you’ll need an adult to drive you home after.

The Lasting Effects of Dental Anxiety

Adults who are afraid of the dentist tend to skip routine visits and ignore symptoms that need attention. The associated risks are considerable, since even the smallest dental issues can quickly turn into large ones if left unchecked. In these cases, the result can be a far more serious treatment than you would need if you’d gotten checked out sooner. This can lead to more treatments, more pain and more anxiety. With all our sedation and anesthesia dentistry options in Teaneck, NJ, this should never happen to you!
